THE SPANISH WATER DOG

The Perro de Agua Español or Turco Andaluz is an ancient breed of the Iberian Peninsula. Used in the south as an all-around farm dog and determined herder and in the north on fishing boats to retrieve dropped catch and protect against birds, dogs in both areas were additionally used to hunt upland game and water fowl. 

Although ancient, the breed was only recognized as a native breed in Spain in the 1980's. The Spanish stud book is still open, meaning previously unregistered dogs may still join the gene pool.

Temperamentally, Spanish Water Dogs are devoted and highly trainable companions, but THEY DO REQUIRE an experienced fair and firm hand. SWDs can be challenging first-time dogs. Most  require a job in life from competitive venues to finding the car keys. Obedience, agility, conformation, herding, boat dog, family dog.

​Dudley is a sunny, athletic and open-charactered service dog from the Big Apple. Imported from Spain, Dudley brings new genetics and excellent health to the US gene pool. This is Dudley's first litter.

Lexi is a "phenomemama", a stellar mother dedicated to her pups until the moment they leave. This will be her third and final litter. She brings superb health clearances, intelligence, a devoted and willing temperament, and a gorgeous headpiece. Her pups are in the USA, Canada and Finland. Lexi is solid beige with a black nose and dark eyes. She has a natural bob tail.

All health clearances completed and are clear/normal. Hips for both parents are certified OFA Good.

We breed slowly.
​We Average ONE LITTER EVERY 1-2 YEARS.

As a serious preservation kennel and the breed's first AKC Breeder of Merit, we at Ariosa breed each litter with great consideration. Generally, we're breeding for our own next great contender. Pups are raised in the home with dedication to raising well-socialized and curious pups with all three drives: pack, food and toy.

The Spanish Water Dogs is a rustic general-purpose breed which thrives with appropriate socialization and mental stimulation. Expect to attend a class or two!

Lisa is a founding member of the AKC Parent Club in 2004 and has served on its board of directors in almost every capacity. Currently, she is the Judges Education Coordinator, Health & Wellness Chair, and AKC Liaison. Her dogs earned the first AKC herding and agility titles in the breed. Her dogs have won Best of Breed at National Specialties, the Westminster Dog Show, and the AKC National Owner Handler Series.
